Q: Who is Cisco Systems?
Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: CSCO) is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Cisco products include routers, LAN and ATM switches, dial-up access servers and network management software. These products, integrated by the Cisco IOS software, link geographically dispersed LANs, WANs and IBM networks. Cisco Systems news and product/service information are available on the World Wide Web site at http://www.cisco.com/. Cisco Systems is headquartered in San Jose, Calif.
Q: What is a Cisco Networking Academy?
As the worldwide leader in networking devices Cisco Systems has developed several programs of study (CCNA, CCNP, etc…) in an effort to train students to configure their routers and switches.
The Cisco Networking Academy Program is a comprehensive e-learning program that provides students with the Internet technology skills essential in a global economy. The Networking Academy delivers web-based content, online assessment, student performance tracking, hands-on labs, instructor training and support, and preparation for industry standard certifications.
Q: What sets the South Mountain Cisco program apart from all the others?
We offer many advantage. A few of which are:
- All courses within our program are taught by certified Cisco instructors. All our instructors are Cisco Certified Academy Instructors (CCAI) and Cisco Certified Networking Associates CCNA). In addition, most are Cisco Certified Networking Professionals (CCNP).
- Our small class size means more individual contact with the instructor.
- Over 35 hours of open lab times are available to students each week. In addition, all of this lab time is covered by qualified Cisco tutors.
- The abundance of Cisco equipment in our labs allows students plenty of hands-on configuration practice. Our CCNA lab (BE132) and our CCNP/Security lab (BE133) each house more than 25 routers and switches just for student use.
In addition, each lab allows remote access to some of these routers and switches. This allows students the ability to refine their configuration skills from any Internet connection (at any time.)
Q: What are the names and course numbers of the Cisco classes offered at South Mountain Community College?

Q: What is the first Cisco course I should take?
The first course is our CNT140 class. It’s called Cisco Networking Basics and covers network terminology and protocols, local area networks (LAN), and wide area networks (WAN). The topics discussed in the course include Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) models, cabling and cabling tools, routers, router programming, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing, and network standards. There is no prerequisite for this course.
Q: What industry certifications does Cisco offer and
how do SMCC Cisco courses fit in?
The courses SMCC offers will help prepare students for several industry certification exams including the Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) and Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP). Information regarding these (and other certifications) can be found on our Industry Certification page. More information regarding these and other Cisco certifications can be found on Cisco Systems Certifications Resource page.
Q: What degrees/certification can be attained from
South Mountain Community College by taking these CNT classes?
We offer three degree/certification paths. They include the follow:
- Certificate of Completion in Network Administration: Cisco
- Certificate of Completion in Network Technology: Cisco
- Associate in Applied Science Degree in Network Technology: Cisco
- Coming Soon: AAS Degree in Information Technology Security (ITS)
More information regarding these degrees/certifications can be found on our SMCC Degrees and Certifications page.
Q: How long will it take to gain these industry
certifications?
Each of the CCNA classes (CNT140, CNT150, CNT160 and CNT170) are offered in both 8-week and 16-week semesters. Students in the 8-week program can start CNT140 in the fall and finish CNT170 in the spring.
All other Cisco classes (CCNP, Security, Wireless) are offered as 16-week semesters. Depending on your prior knowledge and study skills you may be able to take two at a time. Most students, however, only take one per semester.
Q: What is the workload in these classes?
These classes are designed for students who are seriously interested in the field of computer networking. Students will need to be committed to the amount of work required in these classes, both inside and outside of class. Most of these courses are 4 credit classes, which means extensive reading and homework assignments. Many of the topics in these courses are very complex and will require students to put in time outside of class to grasp these subject areas.
Q: When does SMCC offer these courses? How many sections will be offered and what are the days and times?
Each semester we offer a variety of Cisco Networking classes during the day and evening. Our specific schedule can be seen on our Class schedules page.
